The New School Theatre Announces 2009 – 2010 Season

This September The New School Theatre enters its fourth year, and its Artistic Director, Michael Oliver, is hoping to build on the success of the last three seasons, in particular the success of last year. After winning two CAPPIES Awards, however, one for Featured Actress and one for Theatre Make-up, that task will not be easy. “We could have better audiences, better productions, better acting and designs, better everything and still not top the acclaim we earned last year with those awards,” Michael said. “For better or worse, the acknowledgement gained through awards sets the standard.” With that in mind, this year’s season will be like no other.

For the past three years, The New School Theatre season has consisted of a CAPPIES production, a One-Act Festival, and a New Play Festival. This year’s season is similar but with plenty of wrinkles to keep student artists and audiences wanting more. And we still have not finalized the seniors’ Early College Projects, which always make our theatre activities so interesting.

The season starts with the One-Act Festival, which is open to student directors, designers, and actors. Michael will be directing one, or possibly two, of the shows, with interested students directing additional productions.

At the end of October, we begin work on our fourth CAPPIES show, an improvisationally developed commedia dell’arte performance. The exact scenario has not yet been selected, but it is sure to contain many of commedia’s famous characters, from the lovers Isabella and Flavio to the servants Arlechenno and Columbina to, of course, miserly Pantalone and pompous Capitano. With its combination of masked and unmasked characters, singing and dancing, pratfalls and romantic soliloquies, the commedia has something for everyone. This show will open at the end of the first semester at 7:30 on Friday, January 15, and runs Friday through Sunday, January 24.

During the 3rd quarter, The New School Theatre teams up with New School TV to produce a series of original TV shows. These shows will cover the gamut of genres, from the police drama and the sitcom to the Nightly News and Weekly Magazine. These shows will be aired bi-weekly during lunch and Essential Time.

As usual, we will wrap up the year with a New Play Festival and Contest. This year, however, we take the contest beyond the boundaries of The New School itself, opening it up to high school students in the Greater Washington area. This year the contest and festival will be done in collaboration with The Sanctuary Theatre, Inc., a Washington-based theatre that has been in existence since 1984. The winning script will receive a workshop production using a combination of professional actors and New School students.
